of the Progressive Populist Caucus Of The Texas Democratic Party

Definitions

  • Progressive - As in the contemporary U.S. progressive movement seeking systemic change to advance both economic and social justice for all citizens.
  • Populist - The contemporary movement to advance the interests of ordinary citizens over those of corporations and wealthy oligarchs often through their influence on government policy.
  • Caucus - A gathering of like-minded progressives and populists in Convention, under the rules of the Texas Democratic Party.

Working Principals

As adopted at the Texas Democratic Party State Convention PP Caucus in June, 2002.

Objectives

Per John Behrman-The first cause and duty of this Caucus shall be the re-building of a popular party for Texas Democrats.

The second cause and duty shall be adoption of a progressive platform for the people of Texas (ie: as advancing citizens over Corporations and wealthy oligarchs).

Strategies To Achieve Objective

Sphere of Influence

Beginning with the State Party level, later, local Party, eventually national Party.

Principle Areas Of Focus

Party leadership, structure, rules, resolutions, platform, grassroots empowerment and participation, candidate recruitment, candidate and officeholder loyalty to the Principles of a reformed Democratic Party of Texas.

Initiatives To Be Undertaken Prior To 2004 Convention

  • Outspoken advocacy of Party reform.
  • Recruitment of support from within ranks of SDEC.
  • Coalition with like-minded groups to achieve our objectives.
  • Direct action on current Party leadership to step down to make way for a new order.
  • Recruitment of new Party leadership from within our ranks or like-minded groups.
  • Oversight and criticism of unprogressive and unpopulist comportment of Party leaders, candidates and officeholders.
  • Proposals for reform and systemic change when new order is installed.
  • Development of Convention tactics aimed at achieving dominance in pre-convention committees, including Rules, Resolutions and Platform, candidate recruitment, candidate loyalty orientation and the resultant reforms and systemic changes.

Initiatives To Be Undertaken at the 2004 Convention

  • Consolidate power and influence in Convention leadership and officers, achieving acceptance of our point of view
  • Achieve acceptance among Convention elected offices, including Party Officers and SDEC
