On Tuesday, 15 November, beginning at 7PM, at The Artery (5401 Jackson and Prospect), the Harris County Young Democrats (HCYD) will host a panel discussion featuring Reps. Jessica Farrar, Scott Hochberg, Rick Noriega, and Garnet Coleman. Our guests will discuss the recent legislative sessions in Austin and the stranger than fiction workings of our one party state government.
Why is it that the Republican leaders in our state insist on cutting taxes on property and raising taxes on sales? Why are school vouchers being pushed when our public schools are woefully underfunded? And why doesn't Rick Perry's hair ever move? Get the answers to these and other questions from those that fight the good fight and do all they can to restore sanity to our state's public policy.
Then, after you have satisfied the left side of your brain, indulge your artistic right brain with the music of the award winning (Houston Press) band SkyBlue '72. A great band will put on a great show for you.

The Cold War is over, you may have noticed, yet Dr. Strangelove is still right on target: a ferocious comedy about the end of the world and the onset of nuclear winter. Few remember how many negative reviews the film received when it first came out (like most Kubrick films) and today it may be revered -- but its lessons go unobserved by most filmmakers. This film will be part of the Nuclear Show in the Media Center Gallery.

Join the Progressive Action Alliance in viewing Wal-Mart: the High Cost of Low Prices at the Artery!
This week, the director of "Uncovered: The War on Iraq" and "Outfoxed" released his latest film, "Wal-Mart: the High Cost of Low Prices." It's a powerful exposé on the toll the Wal-Mart behemoth has taken on workers and communities across the country, and how we can help turn the tide.

Civil Disobedience
After we left Crawford at the end of August, McLennan County designated the county bar ditches "no speech zones" by making it illegal to camp, eat or erect a structure for "living" in them . Additionally, they created a "no parking zone" for a 7 mile radius around the Bush ranch. This is a violation of our constitutional rights to free speech and free assembly. On Tuesday, November 22, some of us will challenge this ordinance by gathering in the Camp Casey 1 ditch to let George Bush know that he cannot continue to turn a deaf ear to our grievances.

The past year has seen many tragic milestones in the war on Iraq. Despite the President's assertion that major combat ended last year, military operations have continued, and resulted in the destruction of the city of Falluja, 2,038 American deaths, 200,000 Iraqi deaths, 199 coalition deaths, and 15,353 American soldiers wounded. But this year has also been a year of victories for our movement (figures as of 11/04/05).
