Jim Henley and Akif Uzman The Henley for Congress Campaign brought together hundreds of citizens, many new to politics, into an endeavor to bring about positive change for America and a return to rational discourse. Among them were Democrats, Republicans, and Independents who saw in Jim Henley hope, integrity, and a man genuinely committed to the ideals of American democracy. While the voting of this campaign is over, we must not disband for awhile just yet…. So that we can come back together when the horn sounds, please share your reflections on the 2006 campaign and what you plan to do for the 2008 Presidential Elections! As Jim’s counterpart in Dead Poet’s Society urged his students, “carpe diem” – Sieze the Day….Let us sieze this moment in American history…..

Amy Sater, Henley for Congress volunteer John Culberson has introduced an amendment (Amendment to Eliminate Sanctuary Policies) that would deny federal grants for law enforcement to cities with policies that restrict police officers from asking questions regarding immigration status. Houston has prohibited inquiries about immigration status since 1992. This amendment deprives cities across America of much needed federal grants, which are critical for fighting the War on Drugs, local Homeland Security needs, and a host of other issues. Moreover, it takes no positive step toward promoting coordination between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Mr. Culberson’s website offers the following quote: "My amendment will enforce existing federal law by cutting off funding for cities and counties that do not repeal their sanctuary policies. These policies are designed to shield criminal aliens, and my amendment is intended to uncloak them." On the contrary, these policies are presumably designed to make it easier for police to gather needed information, since individuals may be more likely to cooperate with police investigations if they are not forced to disclose their immigration status. Changes to this policy may have unintended effects, which are likely to be clearer to law enforcement officials than to the rest of us. The issue is not whether police should or should not be allowed to question people about their immigration status – that’s for local law enforcement and city officials to decide. The real issue is that law enforcement needs federal support, not politically motivated federal directives. Mr. Culberson should not be trying to score political points with his extremist anti-immigration supporters by withholding federal funds. At a time when the crime rate in Houston has taken an upturn, let’s not make it harder for our police officers to do their job.

Rick Brennan, Campaign ManagerJim Henley for Congress We Americans must confront enormous problems in this first decade of the 21st century. The Bush Administration’s foreign policy has led to unending war in Iraq and a dramatic loss of our stature as a nation, as a result of Abu Graib and other scandals, and the manipulation of pre-war intelligence to justify the war in Iraq. Unsurprisingly, public opinion polls show people from around the world - even in countries long allied with America - view our country as a threat to world peace and international stability. And rising tensions with Iran raise the prospect of another unpopular, unnecessary, and possibly unwinnable conflict – a new front in this seemingly endless war on terror. The Republican Party now controls both the White House and Congress. This one-party rule has brought us record budget deficits, tax cuts benefiting only the wealthy, rollbacks of environmental and worker protections and needed social programs, record gas prices, no-bid contracts for Halliburton and Bechtel, lobbying and ethics scandals, a pharmaceutical giveaway disguised as a prescription drug benefit, secret domestic surveillance programs, and the disastrous mismanagement of FEMA. In the end, three words sum up the performance of this one-party government: corruption, cronyism and incompetency. We are at a moment of crisis. What happens in the next few months will determine the course we, as a people, will take. Will we allow those who are responsible for the current situation to continue on this destructive path, or will we stand up and provide the leadership necessary to right the wrongs of the recent past? What can ordinary citizens do to put America back on the right track? The answer can be found in the voices of our people’s history. Listen to wisdom of the anthropologist Margaret Mead, who once said that one should “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” To her, everyday people are the authors of history, not the presidents and politicians who dominate our textbooks. Take the soldiers that composed George Washington’s Revolutionary army, or the abolitionists that offered up their homes as part of the Underground Railroad - despite the consequences, or the suffragettes that dedicated their lives to the principle of gender equality. They, like countless others, forced history’s hand, and the world we live in is a better place because of their efforts. So this year in 2006, we, ordinary American citizens from all walks of life, must declare our principled opposition to one party rule and the mess it has created. We can honor the noble tradition of American citizenship by coming together, Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike, to ensure that our system of checks and balances is restored. Judging from recent public opinion polls, the majority of Americans are of like mind. Checks and balances provide the oversight our Founding Fathers intended to be a permanent fixture of the federal government. If we want things to improve, we, the people, must make it happen-just as history teaches. Our collective future is our collective responsibility; so let us rebuild our great country, block-by-block, neighborhood-by-neighborhood, in every voting precinct around. We have much to do and there is little time to waste, so I invite you to join the Jim Henley for Congress campaign and help send a plain-spoken teacher to the people’s House to speak on our behalf. Together, we can make history. Americans, come together!

Jim Henley This week, I asked my debate students what they thought of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's idea of sending a $100 check to most Americans to compensate for rising gas prices. The Lanier students were unimpressed - even my Republican students considered it dumb pre-election pandering! Meanwhile, the Speaker of The House, Dennis Hastert, (a Republican and twelve year House veteran) appears at a gas station on the other side of Capitol Hill and with cameras rolling he exclaims "We need to start now", then calls for "a study". Cragg Hines in The Houston Chronicle calls them "Beavis & Butthead". When you add my opponent John Culberson's recent vote to this pair, another trio of comedians comes to mind. This past week, John Culberson voted against a non-binding resolution to remove certain oil company tax breaks from a bill (HR4297) now pending in the House and Senate Conference Committee. These tax breaks are valued at 5 billion dollars. While I do not intend to demonize the oil corporations during this price run- up, now is not the time to change the rules and give additional tax breaks to corporations who are experiencing record profits. Our website lists the special interest PAC donations received by Mr. Culberson. Many of Culberson's PAC donations come from oil corporations, automobile manufacturers, and freeway construction companies. John Culberson learned how to milk the corporate special interests from his mentor, Tom DeLay. These special interests hired Culberson and he votes for them against the interests of the folks of the Congressional District 7.Are you ready to elect a candidate for Congress who rejects all PAC donations and seeks donations only from individual voters? If the voters hire me in November, they will have the only Texas Congressman to go to Washington with a campaign financed solely by the voters of his district! Join our campaign, send in a much needed donation and volunteer in a campaign of families and neighbors determined to change the course of our nation!

Kristina Meyer, Henley for Congress VolunteerCo-founder, Co-president Lamar Young DemocratsChair, High School Caucus of Texas Young Democrats This weekend, over a hundred young democrats converged in Austin for the annual Texas Young Democrats Convention. Groups from all over the state came together to participate in discussions, workshops, caucuses, and committee meetings to strengthen the front of Texas Democratic youth and to have a good time with fellow young Democrats. The Lamar Young Democrats were honored to have Mr. Henley as one of our chaperones and as a special guest speaker at the close of the convention. One of our main goals as an individual high school group and as part of a statewide caucus is to promote the spread of Young Democrats clubs in high schools across the district and the state. It was our pleasure this past weekend to meet other successful high school clubs, such as A&M Consolidated Young Democrats from College Station. Although their high school is located in a typically conservative community, their club has flourished under strong leadership and active members. Our collaboration during the High School Caucus and general sessions gave us a new perspective, as well as an inspiration for the future. We hope to learn from such dedicated groups and individuals as we work with them to extend the involvement of high school students in the party and to focus on issues that affect us directly, such as public education. Likewise, our involvement in the political process will prove to be very important this coming fall as we participate in campaign activities to aid those who wish to represent our interests. The Lamar Young Democrats looks forward to working actively with the Henley campaign to unseat John Culberson, giving a voice back to both District 7 and high school students in this district.

Akif Uzman, Henley Volunteer Many years ago when President Reagan tried to raise national fears that the Nicaraguan Sandanistas were preparing an invasion of the US across the Texas border. The sheriff in Brownsville told reporters, when he was asked about his concerns over an invasion, that he felt little concern and that Brownsville businesses could use the tourism the Sandanitas would provide. So, when in the eyes of Mr. Culberson did Texans become so fearful? Reading the Mr. Culberson’s comments in the Houston Press (Nov 2-8, 2006) makes it clear that he feels that Texans are now a fearful lot, and that stroking their fears of alien invasion is the best political strategy not only for re-election but also for governing. Currently, Mr. Culberson claims that we are facing an invasion of Islamic terrorists from Mexico and Canada. He has no viable solution and how he expects a mere 700-mile fence to keep out these dreaded, imagined terrorists is unclear. One response to fear is extreme violence, and here Mr. Culberson’s extremism fills me with dread. He currently advocates carpet-bombing Iraq’s major urban areas, after mysteriously evacuating the women and children. In his mind all Middle Eastern men in Iraq should be killed. In sparing the lives of the women and children, one can only wonder what he imagines for their future. In centuries past in this part of the world such massacres led to the enslavement of women and children by the Christian Crusaders. Mr. Culberson, what is it you had in mind for these survivors? Or more strategically, what is achieved militarily or politically by such barbarism? If history has taught us anything, such barbarism begets more barbarism. Culberson’s yard signs say that “Culberson Keeps His Word.” Given his recent extremist statements advocating barbaric violence abroad and ludicrous approaches to our immigration problem, how dare anyone vote for such a man?
